Visualization of Weak Interaction Effects on N<sub>2</sub>O Schiff Base Ligands in Iron(II) Spin Crossover Complexes

Single crystals of an iron(II) spin crossover (SCO) complex containing N2O Schiff base ligand, [FeII(qsal-COOH)2], were successfully prepared. The crystal structures from a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study obtained at 100 and 170 K yielded information regarding both the low-spin high-spin states, without any breakage being observed after phase transition. Structural analysis was performed to visualize origin SCO phenomenon in [FeII(qsal-COOH)2] complex. We report that fundamental requirements for abrupt SCO, particularly Fe-qsal complexes, are not only combination weak interaction effects, such as π–π, P4AE (parallel four-fold aryl embrace), hydrogen bonding, but also presence solvents crystalline structure, since solvent molecules can influence interactions between [FeII(qsal-X)2] molecules.
